VOLUNTEER faqs

Frequently asked questions

How old do I have to be to volunteer?

Our opportunities are usually catered towards high school students and students interested in volunteering during the summer prior to entering Grade 9 but we do accept volunteers of all ages.

Do I have to submit a resume or application to volunteer?

In order to access our volunteer services, you must register as a YNA volunteer. Once you are registered, you will be able to register for opportunities offered through our site and receive email updates. While many opportunities do not request for applications or resumes, some organizations who offer long-term positions may ask for the volunteer to complete an application and/or submit a personal resume. In the event where an organization requests such information, feel free to reach out to us if you would like some tips on how to draft your own resume.

Do I need to book an interview to join YNA?

Nope. We believe in simplicity and convenience for volunteers. Let’s face it, your life is busy and we’re here to save you time when it comes to searching for opportunities.

What is the time commitment for volunteering?

Time commitment varies depending on the type of volunteer activity. This ranges from one day events (special events), short term (less than 3 months) and long term (more than 3 months) commitments.

Do I need to get a Police Check? Who pays for it?

Organizations that work with children or individuals from the vulnerable sector usually request that volunteers obtain a police check. The purpose of a police check is to ensure that the volunteers working with the organization’s clients do not have a criminal record. Volunteers have to pay for their own police check; however, in many cases, organizations will provide you with a letter in which case the police may offer a discount.

I am new to Canada. Do I need a permit or be required to speak fluent English?

No permits are required to volunteer because you are not being payed for the service you render. Basic English is usually accepted for most events; however, it depends on what the organization is requesting. Some opportunities may not require you to speak English. We understand the challenges newcomers face, so feel free to talk to us about any assistance you need!

Can I only sign-up for one opportunity?

Volunteers can sign-up for as many opportunities as they wish! Please keep in mind that you must be able to commit to the time requirements of each opportunity.

I have already RSVP’d but I can not make it.

We expect volunteers to commit to the opportunity they register for. The purpose of reserving your volunteering position is to allow for our partners to know how many volunteers to expect. We do understand unexpected situations may arise after your RSVP, so in this case, please notify us 24 hours prior to your assigned shift.

Where can I sign up for an event?

Head over to our volunteer portal page https://volunteers.ynalliance.ca and sign in to your account. From there, you can click "Volunteer Opportunities" at the top of the page to view each listing.
